The Snow Mask

<< Back to the main Stories/poems page

Snow stretches as far as the eye can see
Sombre whiteness contrasting with the dark of night
Virginal, puritanical
Masking life's impurities
Hiding uneven pavements gripped by ice
No car tyres, cat paws, footprints yet to leave their mark.
The pristine whiteness casts a spell,
lulls the onlooker to marvel
at such a splendid sight
that lifts the spirit in a moment of magic
and transports it temporarily to
Oblivion.

That moment interrupted by a voice,
asking a simple question:
What about the homeless on such a night?
