The Tiptoe Teddy

<< Back to the main Stories/poems page

On a cold winters day. There was a little girl called Lucy who lived with her mum and her sister Rosie. It was Lucy’s birthday in a few days and she still didn’t know what present she wanted. [But her mind was about to change.]

Then her Mum called for Lucy and her sister to come and join her on a walk with their dog Sparkles. So off they went on their walk. Then they walked by a shop and the most beautiful thing caught Lucy’s eyes. It was the most beautiful teddy bear she had ever seen. She said to her mother “Oh that is the most beautiful teddy bear!” Then she thought to herself. “I’d love that for my birthday!”

A few days passed., Lucy woke up really early and ran into her mum. “Mum it’s my birthday!”

“Speaking of birthdays!” her Mum said, going over to Lucy’s wardrobe and taking out the box with the red rapping paper. Lucy’s eyes lit up with excitement. “I wonder what it is!” “Well open it and find out!” said Mum. “Ok here it goes!” She opened it really slowly at the start and then ripped it open. “It’s just what I wanted” said Lucy. Then off she ran up the stairs into her room and shut the door. She lay on her bed and said to her beautiful new teddy “I am going to call you Ted! Yes, Ted the teddy that sounds right.” It was late and off to bed she went.

The very next morning Lucy noticed that her teddy had moved from where she had left it that night. She thought about this and she could only think of one thing. Lucy asked her Mum and Rosie if they had moved Ted, but they had not. The next minute she heard her mother say “Come on girls, time for school.” But Lucy didn’t answer. Then her mother came up and said “Hurry up!”

By then Lucy had got back into bed and said “Mum, I don’t feel well!” “Oh you poor thing you look poorly! But you can’t stay here, I’m going to work and your sister is going to school.” “I can stay here by myself. I’m ten years old” said Lucy. “Ok, come on Rosie, let’s go!” said her mum to her sister and off they went. “At last” said Lucy “it’s about time I got some piece and quiet. Now I can find out what happened to Ted”.

She had to find out why her teddy was moved. So, Lucy went to investigate. She crawled around on the floor but all she found was little footprints. Then she thought to herself there is only one person that the footprints could belong to - Ted! “They have to be Ted’s!” said Lucy “But how could they?” Then she picked up Ted and when she held him in her hand his head lifted up and his eyes sparkled and he said to her “I knew you would find out that I’m alive, but I wasn’t sure that you would believe in me! My name is Tiptoe Ted” he said. “You did wish for a special friend didn’t you?”

“I knew there was something special about you, but just didn’t know what until now!” said Lucy “But I didn’t ask for a bear. I asked for a special brother!”

“Am I special enough?” said Ted.

“The most special bear in the world!” said Lucy. Ever since she has kept her secret!

“It’s like having a brother without anybody knowing! The greatest present ever!” she says to herself.

A great story
