I am delighted to announce that Nagarhope Nepal is now an officially registered NGO (non-governmental organisation). Through the VDC (village development committee), DDC (district development committee), CDO (chief district officer) and the SWC (social welfare council), the Nagarhope Nepal committee have enabled Nagarhope’s work to progress. This was an important step for Nagarhope and it means now that we are fully legally obligated to work within the boundaries of our constitution. We have since had our first two official meetings, discussing amongst other things the long-term goals of the organisation.
Shree Terse Skool Building -
As of 6th of July, the roof of Shree Terse Higher Secondary School in Talamarang has been completed. The building is on hold for ten days and will reconvene when the plasterers and window fitters arrive.
Sunrise Skool, Nagarkot –
We now have 49 children being sponsored in Sunrise School from classes Nursery up to three. They recently concluded their first terminal examination (four every year). Sunrise is now part of a skool union along with another 15 local schools, all of them have the same class schedules, book lists, exam times, fees etc
Miniland Skool, Teku, Kathmandu -
The Kalimati Kids project has now been running for three months, 24 children are being sponsored to go to Miniland school. Nagarhope is looking for sponsors for twenty four children who are attending Miniland school. To sponsor a child in Miniland or Sunrise, please contact Niamh (Mam) on niamhclandillon@hotmail.com or ring her on 01 6241328. Sponsorship through primary and secondary level could be for as long as thirteen years, depending on the age and class of the child.
We ask anyone who would like to sponsor to keep this in mind. As well as providing all schooling costs, Nagarhope also undertakes regular checks and visits to all schools in which we sponsor a child. Miniland sponsorship costs €15 per month.
Nagarhope Skools Quiz Competition –
The Nagarhope Nepal committee members have been drafting a proposal to run an inter-schools quiz competition. For a small budget we hope, over the coming months, to run this quiz competition with 14 local government schools. For the winning school, we will offer a scholarship to one deserving and hard-working boy and one girl from a poor background. The scholarship will cover the costs of two years of college education, most likely in Bhaktapur, a city halfway between Kathmandu and Nagarkot.
Teachers Support -
Nagarhope is now providing salaries to four teachers in different schools – all government schools who are running their schools with a lack of teachers. Many schools even have voluntary teachers who come on a part-time basis to ensure regular classes are upheld. In each case, the schools have been asked to contact their DEO (district education office) to inform them that they have an extra teacher paid for by an NGO. Should anyone wish to sponsor one of these teachers please contact Niamh through email. Sponsoring a teacher costs €30 per month. As with sponsor Kids and the schools they attend, regular visits are made to these schools to check that both the school are happy with their work and the teachers themselves are content in their new job.
